Laptop Screen Flickering in Windows 11?
Causes and Possible Solutions

Most flicker is a driver or setting problem you can fix for free. A 30-second test tells you whether yours is software or hardware, before you spend anything.

⚡ Quick Answer

Screen flicker in Windows 11 is usually caused by a display driver problem, an incompatible app, or power-saving display settings, and only sometimes by failing hardware. First open Task Manager: if it flickers with the screen, the cause is the driver or hardware; if it stays steady, an app is responsible. Then work through the fixes in order: press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver, update it (or roll it back if the flicker began after an update), set a fixed refresh rate, and turn off adaptive brightness. If an external monitor stays steady while the laptop screen flickers, the panel or display cable is at fault.

A flickering laptop screen looks alarming, and many people assume the screen is dying and start pricing a replacement. In practice, the large majority of Windows 11 flicker cases we see trace back to software: a display driver that misbehaved after an update, a power-saving feature that adjusts the picture on the fly, or a refresh rate setting the panel doesn't handle smoothly. Those are free to fix, and it's worth ruling them out before paying for any repair.

This guide is ordered cheapest-first. It starts with a short test that tells you whether you're dealing with software or hardware, walks through the fixes that cost nothing, and ends with a symptom table so you can recognise a genuine screen or cable fault when you see one. Menu names can differ slightly between Windows 11 versions, but the paths below are the standard ones.

The 8-Step Fix, in Order

Stop as soon as the flicker stops, then note which step fixed it.

01
Split the cause in 30 seconds with Task Manager
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and watch it. If Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen, the cause is the display driver or the hardware. If Task Manager stays steady while another app flickers, that app (or something that overlays it) is the culprit. This one test decides which of the steps below you actually need.
02
Reset the graphics driver with a keyboard shortcut
Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen goes black for a second and you may hear a short beep as Windows restarts the graphics driver. If the flicker stops, a temporary driver glitch was the cause; if it returns within minutes, continue with the next steps.
03
Update the display driver from a trusted source
Open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click your graphics adapter and choose Update driver. Also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, and your laptop maker's own support tool (Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant, Dell SupportAssist). Avoid third-party "driver updater" programs and random download sites.
04
Roll back the driver if the flicker started after an update
In Device Manager > Display adapters, double-click your adapter, open the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver (if the button is greyed out, no earlier version is stored). Restart afterwards. A flicker that began right after a driver or Windows update is the clearest sign this will help.
05
Check the refresh rate and dynamic refresh rate
Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and look at Choose a refresh rate. Pick a fixed rate (such as 60Hz) instead of a Dynamic option, which switches rates on the fly and can cause visible flicker on some panels. Many business laptops only offer 60Hz, in which case this step doesn't apply.
06
Turn off adaptive brightness and display power saving
Under Settings > System > Display > Brightness, switch off Change brightness automatically when lighting changes and Help improve battery by optimizing the content shown and brightness. In your graphics control panel (Intel Graphics Command Center or AMD Software), also look for power or display options with names like display power saving. If the flicker only happens on battery, this is the likely cause.
07
Find the culprit app with a clean boot
If Task Manager stayed steady, press Win+R, type msconfig, open the Services tab, tick Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable all. Then disable startup items in Task Manager's Startup tab and restart. If the flicker is gone, re-enable items a few at a time until it returns. Utilities that overlay the screen (recorders, overlays, display tweakers) are common suspects. Switch back with Normal startup on the General tab when done.
08
Test with an external monitor to isolate the hardware
Connect an external monitor or TV by HDMI or USB-C and press Win+P to choose Second screen only. If the external screen is steady but the laptop screen flickers, the problem is the laptop's panel or its display cable. If both flicker, the graphics driver or graphics hardware is at fault. Also open and close the lid slowly: flicker that changes with hinge angle points to a worn or loose display cable.

"Test before you spend. If an external monitor stays steady, your graphics are fine, and the problem is the screen or its cable, not your whole laptop." — Tech Convenience Store, Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi CBD

🛒 Buying a Used Laptop? Test for Flicker Before You Pay

Flicker is one of the easiest faults to miss in a quick showroom glance. When inspecting any refurbished laptop, show a plain white or grey screen, sweep the brightness from low to high, and open and close the lid slowly while watching for flicker, banding or dark patches. Tilt the screen and look at it from an angle under bright light. Our refurbished grading checklist covers the full set of physical checks.

⚠️ Honest Notes Before You Spend Anything
  • Don't pay for a new screen before testing with an external monitor. It's the cheapest way to tell a panel fault from a software fault.
  • Be wary of "driver updater" programs and random driver download sites. Use Windows Update, Device Manager or your laptop maker's official support tool.
  • Flicker only at low brightness is often normal for panels that dim by switching the backlight rapidly; it isn't always a fault.
  • If it's a cable or panel fault, repair quality matters. Ask what part is being used and whether the repair is warranted before agreeing to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on screen flickering.

  • The most common causes are a faulty or newly updated display driver, an incompatible app, power-saving or adaptive brightness features, and a mismatched refresh rate. Less often it is hardware: a worn display cable at the hinge, a failing screen panel, or a graphics fault. Opening Task Manager and checking whether it flickers too quickly separates software causes from hardware ones.
  • Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to restart the graphics driver, then update the display driver from Device Manager or your laptop maker's support tool. If the flicker began after an update, use Roll Back Driver instead. If neither helps, set a fixed refresh rate and turn off adaptive brightness and display power saving.
  • Not necessarily. Most flicker in Windows 11 is software-related and fixable with driver and setting changes. A failing panel or cable is more likely if an external monitor stays steady while the laptop screen flickers, if the flicker changes with lid angle, or if you also see lines, colour patches or dark areas.
  • Many laptop screens dim the backlight by switching it on and off rapidly (PWM dimming), which some people notice as flicker at low brightness. This is usually normal behaviour for that panel rather than a fault. Raising the brightness a little often removes it.
  • Yes. Occasionally a new driver or Windows update introduces a flicker. If it started right after an update, open Device Manager, go to the adapter's Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver, then restart. Wait for a later driver release before updating again.
  • Tech Convenience Store, Shop U11, F&F Building, Tom Mboya Street, 1st Floor, Nairobi CBD, Mon-Sat 10am-5pm. WhatsApp 0714 722 264 and describe when the flicker happens (after an update, on battery, at certain lid angles). If you bought the laptop from us, tell us and we'll explain what's covered.

Screen flicker feels like a hardware emergency, but it usually isn't. Work through the free software steps first, use the Task Manager test and an external monitor to split software from hardware, and only then consider a repair. If the symptoms point to a worn cable or failing panel, you'll at least be able to tell a technician exactly what you've already ruled out, which keeps repair bills honest.

Not sure which category you're in? WhatsApp 0714 722 264 and describe when the flicker happens, or visit us at Shop U11, F&F Building, Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi CBD. We deliver countrywide via G4S and Fargo Courier to all 47 counties.
