How to Free Up Storage Space on a Windows Laptop
How to Free Up Storage Space
on a Windows Laptop
A full drive slows Windows, blocks updates and stops you saving files. Here is how to see what is eating your space and clear it safely, using only built-in tools.
Open Settings → System → Storage. First run Cleanup recommendations, then open Temporary files and clear Windows Update Cleanup, Delivery Optimization Files, Thumbnails, the Recycle Bin and, if you will not roll back, Previous Windows installation(s), which can be many gigabytes. Then switch on Storage Sense so Windows keeps tidying automatically, uninstall apps you no longer use, and use OneDrive Files On-Demand to make synced files online-only. Aim to keep roughly 15–20% of the drive free. If you keep fighting for space after all this, the drive is too small for how you use the laptop, and a bigger SSD is the real fix.

Many affordable business laptops, including a lot of the refurbished ThinkPads and Latitudes sold in Kenya, ship with a 256GB drive. That is plenty for documents and email, but it fills quickly once Windows updates, a few large apps, downloaded files and a synced cloud folder pile up. When the drive gets close to full, Windows slows down, updates fail to install, and you cannot save new files.
The good news is that most of the recoverable space sits in a handful of predictable places, and Windows 11 has built-in tools to clear them safely. This guide shows you how to see what is using your space, then works through ten ways to reclaim it, ordered roughly by how much they usually recover. If your laptop is also sluggish, our slow laptop guide shows how to tell whether storage is really the cause.
Step Zero: See What Is Actually Using Your Space
Do not delete anything blindly. Look first.
| Where the space usually hides | Typical recovery | Safe to remove? |
|---|---|---|
| Previous Windows installation(s) (Windows.old) | Large, often 15–30 GB | Yes, but ends rollback |
| Windows Update Cleanup and temporary files | Often several GB | Yes |
| Unused apps and games | Depends on the app, can be large | Yes, reinstall later if needed |
| Downloads folder and Recycle Bin | Varies widely | Check contents first |
| Synced OneDrive files kept locally | Size of local copies | Yes, stays online |
| Hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) | Several GB | Yes, but turns off hibernate |
The 10 Ways to Free Up Space — Biggest Wins First
Use the built-in tools before reaching for any third-party cleaner.
Ctrl + Shift + Delete, choose Cached images and files and clear them. Browsers, chat apps and creative tools store caches that grow over time. Clearing them is safe, though sites may load a little slower the first time you revisit them.powercfg /hibernate off to remove it. This also turns off hibernate and Fast Startup, and you can reverse it any time with powercfg /hibernate on. Skip this step if you rely on hibernate."Most of the space on a full laptop is hiding in three or four places. Look first, then clear the biggest one." — Tech Convenience Store, Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi CBD
- Deleting files inside the Windows folder, System32 or WinSxS by hand — this can break Windows. Use the built-in cleanup tools instead.
- Deleting the Windows.old folder manually — remove it through Temporary files so Windows cleans up properly.
- Installing "PC booster" or registry cleaner apps — the built-in tools do the useful work, and these apps often add risk without freeing meaningful space.
- Deleting program folders instead of uninstalling — leaves leftovers and can cause errors. Uninstall from Settings → Apps.
- Clearing space without a backup of important files — back up documents, photos and anything irreplaceable before any big clean-up.
If you have worked through all ten and the drive still fills up within weeks, the drive itself is too small for how you use the laptop. At that point the real fix is more storage, usually a larger SSD, rather than another round of cleaning. Whether a particular model can take a bigger drive depends on the laptop, so check the exact model first. Our spec-checking guide shows how to read your drive type and size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers on freeing up storage space on a Windows laptop.
- Open Settings, then System, then Storage. Run Cleanup recommendations to see temporary files, large or unused files, files already synced to the cloud and apps you rarely use, then open Temporary files and delete the categories you don't need. Finally switch on Storage Sense so Windows keeps clearing temporary files automatically. These three steps use only built-in tools and recover space with little risk.
- Yes, if you don't need to roll back to the previous version of Windows. Windows.old holds the files from your earlier Windows installation after a major update, and can take many gigabytes. Remove it through Settings, System, Storage, Temporary files, by ticking Previous Windows installation(s), rather than deleting the folder by hand. After you remove it you can no longer roll back to the old version.
- Storage Sense is a built-in Windows feature that automatically clears temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin after a period you choose, and can clean old files from the Downloads folder. It can run on a schedule or only when disk space is low. Turning it on is a sensible low-effort way to stop storage filling up again, especially on laptops with a small drive.
- Yes. If you sync OneDrive, each downloaded file also takes room on your laptop. Right-clicking a file or folder in File Explorer and choosing Free up space turns the local copy into an online-only placeholder that still appears in File Explorer and downloads again when you open it. It needs an internet connection to open those files, so keep offline copies of anything you need without a connection.
- A common rule of thumb is to keep roughly 15 to 20 percent of the drive free. Windows needs room for updates, temporary files and virtual memory, and a nearly full system drive can make a laptop slow. If you keep having to clear space just to stay above that level, the drive is too small for how you use the laptop.

A full drive is one of the most fixable problems a laptop has. Windows already includes the tools to find the space and clear it safely, and the biggest gains usually come from just a few places: leftover update files, an old Windows.old folder, apps you no longer use and cloud files kept locally. Clear those, switch on Storage Sense, and most laptops stay healthy for a long time.
