Intel's 8th Gen Kaby Lake R (i5-8250U, i7-8550U) was the first to bring 4 physical cores and 8 threads to the standard 15W laptop U-series. This is not an incremental improvement — doubling the core count roughly doubles multi-core performance for tasks that use multiple cores simultaneously: Chrome with many tabs, Zoom background blur, video encoding, and running multiple applications at once. Every Kenyan professional multitasks. The i5-8250U's 4 cores serve that multitasking far better than the i7-6500U's 2 cores.

🔍 Read the Processor Number — It Tells You Everything
- Find the processor name — on the laptop sticker, in Settings → System → About, or in Task Manager → Performance → CPU.
- Read the number after the hyphen. Example: Core i7-8550U. The first digit (or digits before the hundreds) = generation. 8xxx = 8th Gen. 10xxx = 10th Gen. 11xxx = 11th Gen.
- 6xxx or 7xxx = 6th or 7th Gen — do not buy. These are pre-Windows 11 machines that have already lost security update support. No matter how good the price looks.
