Is an 8th Gen Core i5 better than a 6th Gen i7: Which Processor is Faster in Kenya?

⚙️ Processor Guide  ·  Kenya Buyer Education  ·  Tom Mboya Street

i5 8th Gen vs i7 6th Gen Why Processor Generation Matters More Than the i5 / i7 Label in Kenya

One of the most common mistakes Kenyan laptop buyers make: paying extra for an "i7" without checking the generation. An i7 6th Gen loses to an i5 8th Gen in most real workloads — and the 6th Gen cannot even run Windows 11. Here is the full honest explanation.

⚡ The Direct Answer

An Intel Core i5-8250U (8th Gen) outperforms an Intel Core i7-6500U (6th Gen) in almost every real-world task. Multi-core score: i5-8250U ≈ 4,700 vs i7-6500U ≈ 2,200 in Cinebench R20 — more than double. Single-core: comparable. The 8th Gen also runs Windows 11 officially, consumes less power, delivers better battery life, and has newer integrated graphics. In Kenya's laptop market, always check the generation first — then the i5/i7 tier. A 6th Gen i7 at KSh 18,000 is a worse machine than our certified 8th Gen i5 at KSh 26,500 in every way that matters.

Walk through any computer stall in Nairobi's CBD and you will see machines labelled "Core i7 — Fast Performance!" for KSh 15,000–20,000. The i7 label catches the eye. It sounds premium. But that i7 is almost certainly a 6th or 7th Gen machine — and an i7 from 2015 or 2016 is significantly slower and less capable than an i5 from 2018. This guide explains why, with specific numbers, so you never make this mistake.

The most common way Kenyan buyers lose money on a laptop: paying KSh 18,000–22,000 for a "Core i7" laptop from an informal seller, only to discover it is a 6th Gen machine running an unsupported Windows 10 that no longer receives security updates. That machine cannot officially run Windows 11, cannot receive security patches, and will underperform a certified 8th Gen i5 in every multi-core task. At Tech Convenience Store on Tom Mboya Street, our cheapest laptop is a certified 8th Gen i5 at KSh 26,500 — with genuine Windows 11, a verified battery health report, and a 6-month warranty. The KSh 4,000–8,000 difference over the informal market is not a premium — it is what prevents the situation above.

Note the dashed line — everything below it (6th and 7th Gen) is not Windows 11 compatible and delivers less than half the performance of an 8th Gen i5. The i7-6500U and i5-8250U gap is the most important number on this chart.

5 Reasons Generation Beats the i5/i7 Label Every Time

1
Core Count — The 8th Gen Doubled from 2 to 4 Cores
Intel's 6th and 7th Gen U-series processors (the laptop versions: i5-6200U, i7-6500U etc.) were dual-core — 2 physical cores, 4 threads. Intel's 8th Gen Kaby Lake R (i5-8250U, i7-8550U) was the first to bring 4 physical cores and 8 threads to the standard 15W laptop U-series. This is not an incremental improvement — doubling the core count roughly doubles multi-core performance for tasks that use multiple cores simultaneously: Chrome with many tabs, Zoom background blur, video encoding, and running multiple applications at once. Every Kenyan professional multitasks. The i5-8250U's 4 cores serve that multitasking far better than the i7-6500U's 2 cores.
Real-world example: Running Zoom (HD video, background blur) + Chrome (10 tabs) + Microsoft Word simultaneously. On a 6th Gen i7: noticeable slowdown, dropped frames in video. On an 8th Gen i5: smooth and responsive. The extra 2 cores make the difference, not the i7 label.
2
Windows 11 Support — 6th Gen is Locked Out
Microsoft's Windows 11 minimum requirements include 8th Gen Intel or newer. Intel 6th and 7th Gen processors do not meet the requirements — specifically, they lack the required CPU features (POPCNT, SSE4.2) in the configuration Windows 11 enforces. Windows 10 reached end-of-life in October 2025. A 6th Gen machine running Windows 10 no longer receives security updates — every month that passes adds more unpatched vulnerabilities. In Kenya, where M-Pesa, online banking, eCitizen, and business systems all run through the laptop browser, an unpatched OS is a significant security risk.
What this means: Buying a 6th Gen i7 machine today is buying a machine whose OS security has already expired. Buying any certified machine from our store — all 8th Gen or newer — means Windows 11 security updates until at least 2031.
3
Battery Life — Newer Process Node = More Efficient
Intel's 6th Gen Skylake processors used a 14nm manufacturing process. Intel's 8th Gen Kaby Lake R used an improved 14nm++ process — the "++" represents manufacturing optimisations that deliver more performance per watt. An i5-8250U running the same workload as an i7-6500U will consume less power — which translates directly to longer battery life. In Kenya's load-shedding context, battery life is a professional necessity, not a luxury. An 8th Gen machine typically delivers 8–11 hours real-world; a 6th Gen machine at similar brightness and workload delivers 5–7 hours. That difference often spans an entire KPLC outage window.
4
Integrated Graphics — UHD 620 vs HD 520
The 6th Gen i7-6500U includes Intel HD 520 integrated graphics. The 8th Gen i5-8250U includes Intel UHD 620. In benchmarks: UHD 620 scores approximately 550 points in 3DMark Sky Diver vs HD 520 at approximately 380 — about a 45% improvement. This shows in video playback (UHD 620 handles more codecs natively), video conferencing (camera rendering is smoother), and any browser-based graphics (Canva, Google Slides animation, YouTube 4K). The improvement is not dramatic, but it adds up across every visual task done daily.
5
Long-Term Value — What Are You Actually Buying?
A 6th Gen laptop purchased in Kenya today is buying hardware that is already 9+ years old. The remaining useful life — before performance feels genuinely inadequate for modern browser and app requirements — is 1–3 years. An 8th Gen laptop purchased today has a useful working life of 4–6 years before it starts feeling slow for everyday tasks. Paying KSh 26,500 for a certified 8th Gen i5 vs KSh 18,000 for an informal 6th Gen i7 means paying KSh 8,500 more for a machine that will serve you 2–3 times longer. The per-year cost of the 8th Gen machine is lower.
Calculate it: KSh 18,000 ÷ 2 useful years = KSh 9,000/year. KSh 26,500 ÷ 5 useful years = KSh 5,300/year. The "cheaper" 6th Gen machine costs significantly more per year of useful service.

How to Check Your Laptop's Processor Generation Before Buying

🔍 Read the Processor Number — It Tells You Everything
  1. Find the processor name — on the laptop sticker, in Settings → System → About, or in Task Manager → Performance → CPU.
  2. Read the number after the hyphen. Example: Core i7-8550U. The first digit (or digits before the hundreds) = generation. 8xxx = 8th Gen. 10xxx = 10th Gen. 11xxx = 11th Gen.
  3. 6xxx or 7xxx = 6th or 7th Gen — do not buy. These are pre-Windows 11 machines that have already lost security update support. No matter how good the price looks.
  4. 8xxx = 8th Gen — minimum acceptable. The jump from dual to quad-core happened here. Windows 11 supported. Our Dell Latitude 7390 (i5-8350U) and ThinkPad T490s i5 use this platform.
  5. Verify in BIOS for certainty. Press F2 (HP), F1/ThinkPad button (Lenovo), or F2/Del (Dell) at startup. The BIOS System Information page shows the exact processor model — cannot be faked by a sticker.
