⚡ The Short Answer

Yes — if a hardware fault develops through normal use, you have the right to a repair, replacement, or refund under Kenya's Consumer Protection Act 2012. At Tech Convenience Store, every laptop we sell carries a 6-month warranty covering hardware faults that arise during normal use. Bring your laptop and your receipt to Shop U11, Tom Mboya Street and our technicians will assess same-day — no arguments, no hidden conditions. WhatsApp 0714 722 264 to arrange.

Buying a laptop in Nairobi comes with an important question that most buyers only think about when something goes wrong: what exactly happens if this machine develops a fault? Kenya's Consumer Protection Act of 2012 establishes baseline rights regarding warranties, requiring sellers to honour both explicit warranties — written promises about device quality — and implicit warranties, which exist regardless of whether they are specifically mentioned.

The honest truth about Kenya's laptop market is that many warranties are just empty promises. Some sellers use the word warranty as a marketing trick, while others provide misleading or outright fake coverage. This guide tells you what the law says, what our 6-month warranty actually covers, and what to do if a fault develops — whether you bought from us or anywhere else in Nairobi.

Your Legal Rights — Kenya Consumer Protection Act 2012

The Consumer Protection Act of 2012 provides substantial safeguards that many buyers remain unaware of until problems arise. Under this Act, when you buy a laptop from a business seller in Kenya, the product must be:

  • Of satisfactory quality — not faulty or damaged when you receive it
  • As described — matching the specifications the seller stated at point of sale
  • Fit for purpose — capable of performing the functions a laptop is expected to perform

If the laptop fails to meet any of these standards through a fault that is not caused by the buyer, retailers — not the original manufacturers — bear the primary legal responsibility to resolve consumer disputes regarding faulty merchandise. Your claim is against the seller, not the brand. This matters enormously in Kenya's refurbished market, where many sellers try to deflect warranty claims to "the manufacturer."

⚖️

What the law means practically in Kenya: If your laptop develops a genuine hardware fault within a reasonable time of purchase, the seller is legally obligated to repair it, replace it, or refund you. If a necessary repair or replacement is deemed impossible, the retailer is legally mandated to provide a partial financial refund. A seller who tells you "the warranty expired" or "that's a manufacturer issue, not ours" when a fault develops within weeks of purchase is not being honest about your rights. Always keep your receipt — it is your legal proof of purchase and the starting point for any claim.

Our 6-Month Warranty — Exactly What It Covers

Every certified refurbished laptop sold at Tech Convenience Store, Shop U11, Tom Mboya Street comes with a 6-month warranty from the date of purchase. This is our written commitment — not a verbal assurance, not a handshake deal. Here is precisely what is and is not covered:

✅ Covered by Our 6-Month Warranty

Hardware Faults from Normal Use

  • SSD or hard drive failure during normal operation
  • RAM failure — machine won't boot or crashes repeatedly
  • Motherboard faults not caused by physical damage
  • Screen failure not caused by physical impact — dead pixels, backlight failure, display cable issues
  • Keyboard keys stopping working during normal use
  • USB port or Thunderbolt port failure during normal use
  • Webcam or microphone hardware failure
  • Wi-Fi or Bluetooth hardware failure
  • Battery failure below reasonable performance thresholds within warranty period
  • Charging port hardware failure during normal use
❌ Not Covered by Our Warranty

Damage, Misuse & External Causes

  • Physical damage — drops, cracks, dents caused by the buyer
  • Liquid damage — spills of any kind
  • Cracked or broken screen from impact
  • Power surge damage — always use a surge protector
  • Damage from unauthorised repairs or modifications by other technicians
  • Software issues — viruses, Windows errors, app problems
  • Data loss — always back up your data
  • Accidental damage of any kind
  • Damage from incorrect use or storage in extreme conditions
  • Normal wear and tear — scratches on chassis, key markings fading
💡

Why 6 months? Most laptop hardware faults that stem from the machine's condition at purchase reveal themselves within the first 90 days of normal use. Our 6-month window gives you meaningful protection — double the time — and reflects our confidence in every unit we sell. We hardware-test every machine before sale: SSD health check, RAM diagnostic, battery cycle count, display test, and all port tests. A fault developing within 6 months of that process is a fault we take responsibility for.

Real Scenarios — Would It Be Covered?

Your laptop won't turn on after 3 weeks of normal use Covered
A machine that stops powering on within 3 weeks of purchase with no physical damage is a hardware fault — motherboard, power circuit, or SSD issue. Bring it in with your receipt. We will diagnose same-day and repair or replace. This is exactly what our warranty exists for.
The screen develops a blue tint / lines / black patches after 2 months Covered
Display degradation — dead pixels, colour shift, backlight failure, or horizontal lines developing on a screen that has not been physically impacted — is a hardware fault. Covered under warranty if there is no evidence of physical impact (crack, dent in lid, visible impact point). We replace the screen or the unit.
The SSD fails and the laptop won't boot after 4 months Covered
SSD failure during normal use is a hardware fault and is fully covered within our 6-month warranty. We replace the SSD. Note: data on the failed SSD cannot always be recovered — this is why we always recommend regular backups to Google Drive or an external drive. See our security and backup guide.
You drop the laptop and the screen cracks Not Covered
A cracked screen from a drop is physical damage caused by the buyer — not a manufacturing fault. This is not covered by any warranty in Kenya's market. However, screen repairs are possible — see our guide on cracked screen repair vs replacement for Kenya cost estimates and the decision framework.
You spill water on the keyboard and it stops working Not Covered
Liquid damage voids warranty on all laptops in Kenya's market — ours and everyone else's. The keyboard, motherboard, and charging circuit can all be damaged by liquid ingress. If a spill happens: immediately turn the laptop upside down, do not power on, and bring it to us as soon as possible — the faster it is assessed and dried by a technician, the better the outcome.
Windows is corrupted and the laptop won't boot into Windows Not Covered — but we can help
Software issues — Windows corruption, failed Windows Update, virus damage — are not hardware faults and are not covered by warranty. However, if your laptop came from us with genuine Windows 11 and develops a software issue, WhatsApp us on 0714 722 264 — we can often resolve Windows issues quickly for a small service fee, or guide you through a Windows reset that preserves your files.
⚠️ The laptop was repaired by another technician and now has a new fault Depends
If you take a laptop bought from us to another technician and a new fault develops during or after that repair, the warranty on the affected component may be voided — particularly if the repair was the cause. Damage due to improper use, incorrect installation, or unauthorised repairs/modifications falls outside standard warranty coverage. Always contact us first before taking a warranty machine to another repair shop — we handle most repairs in-house at no cost during the warranty period.

How to Claim Your Warranty at Tech Convenience Store

1
Contact Us First — WhatsApp or Visit In-Store
WhatsApp us on 0714 722 264 with a description of the fault, your purchase date, and a photo or video of the issue if possible. This lets us prepare for your visit and confirm the fault is within warranty scope before you travel to us. Alternatively, walk in to Shop U11, F&F Building, Tom Mboya Street, 1st Floor — Mon–Sat, 10am–5pm.
2
Bring Your Receipt and the Laptop
Your receipt is your proof of purchase and warranty activation. Every machine we sell comes with a written receipt showing the purchase date, serial number, and price. If you have lost your receipt, contact us with your phone number and we may be able to trace your purchase from our records. Do not bring the laptop without the receipt — we cannot process a warranty claim without proof of purchase date.
3
Same-Day Assessment by Our Technicians
Our in-house technicians will assess the fault in-store — typically within the same visit for common faults (SSD, RAM, display, keyboard). We will confirm whether the fault is covered by warranty and advise on the resolution: repair, component replacement, or unit replacement. We do not send machines to external workshops for warranty assessments — everything is handled at Tom Mboya Street.
4
Repair, Replace, or Resolve — At No Cost
If the fault is confirmed as a hardware issue covered by our warranty: we repair or replace at no cost to you. For minor faults (RAM, SSD, keyboard), repairs are often completed same-day or next-day. For more complex faults, we will give you a timeline and keep you updated via WhatsApp. We do not charge for warranty repairs — no labour fees, no parts fees, no hidden costs.

Our Warranty vs What the Market Offers

When shopping for a laptop in Nairobi, the warranty terms are one of the most important — and most poorly understood — differences between sellers. Here is how our 6-month warranty compares to what the wider Nairobi market typically offers:

Warranty Feature Tech Convenience Store ✓
Tom Mboya Street
Typical Informal
Jiji / Street Seller
Typical Market
General CBD Shops
Warranty Period 6 months written ⭐ None or verbal only 1–4 weeks (often verbal)
Written Receipt Always ✓ Rarely Sometimes
Hardware Testing Before Sale Full diagnostic ✓ Usually none Basic visual only
In-house Technician Yes — same-day ✓ No Sometimes
Warranty Claim Process Walk in + WhatsApp ✓ Seller unreachable Varies widely
Genuine Windows 11 Always ✓ Often pirated Sometimes
Battery Health Report Provided on request ✓ Not available Rarely
⚠️

The most common warranty scam in Kenya's laptop market: A seller offers "1-year warranty" verbally at point of sale — but when you return with a fault, the phone number is switched off, the stall has moved, or the seller says the warranty "doesn't cover that." Ask for written proof — if there is no official warranty card or invoice, assume it is not real. Our 6-month warranty is documented on every receipt we issue. The receipt states the purchase date, machine serial number, and our store address. That is your enforceable commitment.

Before You Buy Anywhere — How to Protect Yourself

Whether you buy from us or anywhere else in Nairobi, these steps protect you before and at point of sale:

  • Always get a written receipt showing the purchase date, machine serial number, and seller name. No receipt = no warranty.
  • Ask for the warranty in writing — what it covers, how long it lasts, and where to bring the machine if a fault develops. A verbal warranty is an empty promise.
  • Request a battery health report before buying any refurbished laptop. On Windows: powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt shows the battery's designed vs current capacity. We provide this for every machine on request.
  • Test all ports, webcam, microphone, and keyboard before paying. See our full 15-point pre-purchase checklist.
  • Confirm Windows is genuine: Settings → System → Activation. Should say "Windows is activated with a digital licence." Pirated Windows is a security risk and voids any software-related support.
  • Note the serial number on your receipt and photograph the bottom label of the laptop — this is your proof of which exact unit you purchased.
