Running an outdated Windows version is not just missing features — it means missing security patches that protect your financial data, business files, and personal information from Kenya's increasingly active threat environment.

Windows versioning in 2026 is more confusing than it has ever been. Microsoft now releases features continuously throughout the year, so the version number matters less than whether your machine is actively receiving security updates. As Thurrott.com's 2026 Windows guide explains: "At the time of this writing, Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 are current and supported, and are functionally identical." This guide cuts through the confusion with a clear answer to every version question a Kenyan user needs answered.

Windows 11 version 26H2 — Coming Soon

Microsoft has confirmed Windows 11 26H2 is the next annual feature update, currently in testing with Windows Insiders. Devices running 24H2 or 25H2 will upgrade via a small 174KB enablement package requiring just a restart. No new hardware requirements announced. Expected second half of 2026.

🔴 End of Support — No Longer Safe

Windows 10 (All versions) — UNSUPPORTED

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. No more security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. Machines still running Windows 10 are increasingly vulnerable to malware, ransomware, and cyberattacks — particularly relevant given KE-CIRT's documented threat volumes in Kenya.

Part Three · How to Update
How to Upgrade to the Latest Windows Version

If you are on Windows 11 but not on the latest version, upgrading is straightforward and free. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Windows will find and download any available version upgrades. The move from 24H2 to 25H2 is delivered as a standard update. For the upcoming 26H2, devices on 24H2 and 25H2 will receive it via a tiny 174KB enablement package — just a restart required, not a full reinstall.

If you are on Windows 10 and your PC supports Windows 11 — go to Settings → Windows Update and look for the Windows 11 upgrade offer. Microsoft has been pushing this automatically to eligible Windows 10 machines. If you do not see it, download the PC Health Check app from Microsoft's website to verify compatibility. Windows 11 is a free upgrade for all eligible Windows 10 machines.

⚠️
Before upgrading — back up your data. While Windows upgrades are generally reliable, always back up important files to an external hard drive or cloud storage before running any major Windows version upgrade. Our OS crash recovery guide covers backup best practices for Kenyan users in detail. For QuickBooks users: create a manual company file backup before upgrading (File → Backup Company → Create Local Backup).

Part Four · What's New
What's New in Windows 11 in 2026 — Key Features You Get After Updating
Accelerated Start Menu, Search & Action Center
The June 2026 update introduces a Low Latency Profile — a CPU scheduling change that makes core Windows UI elements (Start menu, Search, Action Center) open and respond faster. Windows Latest calls this one of the five best features in the June 2026 Patch Tuesday update.
🔍
Windows Search — Now Works from 2 Characters
Previously, Windows Search required at least 3 characters before showing file results. The June 2026 update drops this to 2 characters. Short filenames, abbreviations, and two-letter project codes now appear immediately as you start typing. A small but daily-useful improvement.
🎧
Shared Audio — Two People, One PC
New in the May 2026 update (KB5089573): Windows 11 now lets two people listen to the same audio from a single PC simultaneously — stream music to two Bluetooth headphones or two wired headsets at once. Neowin confirmed this as one of the most notable changes in the May update.
📊
NPU Monitoring in Task Manager
For laptops with a Neural Processing Unit (Copilot+ PCs), Task Manager now shows which applications are using the NPU and how much — just like CPU and GPU monitoring. Dedicated NPU, NPU Engine, Dedicated Memory, and Shared Memory columns added to Processes, Users, and Details views.
📷
Multi-Camera Support
Multiple applications can now share a single physical webcam simultaneously — Teams and OBS, for example, can both use your built-in camera at the same time. Previously, the second app would see an error that the camera was already in use.
🔄
Point-in-Time Restore — Coming Soon
Currently in Windows Insider testing — Point-in-Time Restore will let you roll back your entire PC (apps, settings, and personal files) to a recent automatic restore point, similar to Time Machine on macOS. Expected to ship in an upcoming 2026 update for 24H2 and 25H2 users.

Part Five · Critical Warning
Windows 10 End of Life — What Kenyan Users Must Know
🔴 Windows 10 Is No Longer Safe — End of Support October 14, 2025
What end of support means: Microsoft stopped providing security updates, bug fixes, and technical support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Your machine still works — but every vulnerability discovered since that date has no patch, leaving a growing attack surface for malware, ransomware, and cyberattacks.

What this means in Kenya specifically: KE-CIRT documented 3.37 billion cyber threats in Kenya in Q1 2026 alone. Running an unpatched operating system in this environment means your financial data, client files, M-Pesa credentials, and business records are increasingly exposed. The risk compounds every month that passes without updates.

What you should do: (1) Check if your PC can run Windows 11 — Settings → Windows Update, or download Microsoft's PC Health Check app. (2) If compatible, upgrade to Windows 11 for free immediately. (3) If not compatible — your PC does not meet Windows 11 hardware requirements (typically needs TPM 2.0 and 8th Gen Intel or newer) — consider upgrading the machine. All refurbished laptops we sell at Tech Convenience Store come with genuine Windows 11 activated, ready to use safely.
6
Part Six · Your Options
What to Do If Your PC Cannot Run Windows 11

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and a compatible processor — typically Intel 8th Generation or newer, AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer. If your machine does not meet these requirements, Windows Update will not offer the Windows 11 upgrade. You have three options. First, check whether your PC actually has TPM 2.0 — it may be present but disabled in BIOS. Search "TPM Management" in Windows search and press Enter — if it shows TPM 2.0, it may just need enabling in BIOS settings. Second, purchase an extended security updates (ESU) subscription from Microsoft — available for Windows 10 machines at a cost, giving you continued security patches for a limited time. Third — the most practical option for most Kenyan users — upgrade to a laptop that comes with Windows 11 pre-installed and meets all hardware requirements.

Every laptop we sell at Tech Convenience Store — HP EliteBook from 8th Gen, Dell Latitude from 8th Gen, Lenovo ThinkPad — meets Windows 11 requirements and comes with genuine Windows 11 activated. From KSh 26,500, you get a fully supported, actively updated operating system on an enterprise-quality machine. Kenya Tip
Keeping Windows updated in Kenya with unreliable internet: Windows updates can be large (500MB–2GB). Schedule updates for off-peak hours when your connection is more stable — Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options → Active Hours (set your working hours so restarts don't interrupt you). Also ensure Windows Update is set to automatically download over metered connections if using mobile data: Settings → Windows Update → Advanced Options → Download updates over metered connections → ON. Updates are essential for security — do not permanently defer them. Our cybersecurity guide for Kenya covers OS update strategy alongside other protection measures.

Microsoft now delivers new features continuously throughout the year. What matters is not which exact version you are on — it is whether you are actively receiving security updates.
